Christantus Uche Sparks Dominant Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever European campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually secures them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure direct entry to the last 16, especially after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for several Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season proved outmatched against a mostly rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect evening for the traveling side.
